Actor John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln while the president was attending a performance of Our American Cousin at Ford's Theatre. Lincoln was carried across the street to the Petersen family's boarding house, where doctors monitored his breathing and vital signs throughout the night. Lincoln died at 7:22 AM the following morning.
After Lincoln's death, his body was taken to the White House for an autopsy and funeral preparations. Vice President Andrew Johnson was sworn in as the 17th president at 11 AM that day. The assassination plunged the country into mourning, and communities across the nation held public ceremonies to honor the 16th president.
