Abraham LincolnLincoln wrote to General Halleck, expressing concern that the Confederate army was allowed to withdraw from Gettysburg without hindrance. Joshua L. Chamberlain, a Lieutenant Colonel, wrote a report to Acting Adjutant General Lt. George Herendeen about the actions of his regiment, the 20th Maine, at Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg. The report included details about the regiment's ammunition failing and Chamberlain ordering a charge.

Captain Henry Thweatt Owen, from Company C, 18th Virginia Infantry (GNMP), wrote a letter home about the battle, saying that the victory was so great that he didn't think about the losses at first. However, he later felt a great weight at his heart and mentioned the loss of a friend, Henry Ropes.
